An Air Force helicopter crashed , for reasons still unclear , in the early afternoon on Tuesday on the north-east of Mount Palanzone between the municipalities of rennet and Sormano, about one thousand meters. The incident resulted in five deaths : the Captain Fabio Avella, Lieutenant Luke Grana, the first sergeant Alfonso Castronuovo, Lieutenant Mario Di Carluccio, and the airman chose Angelo De Lucia. On the spot they immediately traveled to the mountain rescue teams, firefighters and the police. The area is accessible only by logging roads, passable by jeep, so that the first rescue helicopters were brought in by 118 of the Niguarda hospital in Milan and Como.

In all, the helicopter crashed on the mountain Como - an Ab-212 squadron SAR (Search and Rescue) Milan Linate - at the time of launch there were six soldiers. One of them, Sergeant Donato Barletta, had been sent down to Mount Palanzone before the accident. This allowed him to escape. The helicopter continued its training flight, then return to retrieve the man left on earth. It would have been during the approach maneuver that the accident occurred. The area where the accident occurred, where the same is October 15, 1987 ATR-42 plane crashed a party from London to Cologne (Germany) and killed 34 passengers and three crew members.
